They come from all over. They come from big cities. They come from small towns. Sure, a few of them even come out of hiding from their log cabin in the woods. These are the axe-throwing legends, titans of the killshot. These are the WATL US Open participants and you could become the next champion! If you’ve dreamed of hearing a crowd roar your name (let’s be honest, who hasn’t?) this is the perfect opportunity to get involved in the axe craze sweeping the nation!

The first annual WATL US Open is being held this August at the Bad Axe Throwing club in Chicago, IL. The event is a full weekend’s worth of activity starting Friday, August 10th, and running until the championship tournament that Sunday.
Here’s a look at the itinerary for this wood-splitting affair:
Friday
Wear a smile and your best flannel for the registration coupled with a meet and greet. In the evening we’ll be doing registration and free axe throwing as well as getting to know your fellow competitors. The WATL website membership page is a great resource to find a local WATL participation center near you so you don’t have to go in throwing cold!
Saturday
Final registration will be closed proceeded by the qualifying throws for the tournament:
- Wave 1: 30 qualifying throws per thrower. The top 50 will be chosen to move on to the tournament on Sunday.
- Wave 2: Dig deep! This is the wild card, last chance round of qualifiers. The bottom 50 players throw again and the top 14 are added to the running for the Sunday tournament.
What’s that you say? You’ve got a double-underhanded, no-looker throw you want to impress your friends with? Well stick around Saturday for our Trick Shot Tournament! Come show off your coolest trick or watch expert throwers do theirs. You’re not required to compete in in the trick shot competition but you are encouraged to! This will be three trick throws in a row with Olympic Style Judging Panel, so bring your best and train hard, Rocky style!
Sunday
The Grand Finale. The Coup De Grace. The Big Enchilada. This is what it all comes down to!
Championship Tournament consists of 5 elimination rounds to line up the semi-final round and final round. As the last axe is thrown, the winner will walk away wearing the WATL Open Championship ring on their finger!
